Who can participate in SpeakUp Global programs?Anyone! Our programs are open to students, professionals, and English learners of all backgrounds. Whether you want to improve for work, study, travel, or personal growth, there’s a place for you in our community.

Do I need to be fluent in English to join?No! While absolute beginners (A1 level and below) may struggle, you don’t need to be fluent. If you have at least an A2-B1 level (can hold basic conversations and understand simple English), you’re welcome to join. Our goal is to help you practice and improve, not to test or grade you.

What should I expect from a Bi-Weekly Session?Each session follows one of three themes: SpeakUp Practice, Play & Learn, or Insight Talks. Sessions are interactive, engaging, and designed to improve your fluency, confidence, and communication skills in a friendly environment. Whether it’s a discussion, a game, or an insightful exchange, you’ll get real-world speaking practice with other participants.

How do I register for a Bi-Weekly Session?You can sign up through our registration link, which is announced on our social media, email newsletter, and blog posts. Registration opens 5 days before each session, so keep an eye out for updates. You can also subscribe for notifications to be alerted when a new session is available.

Do I need to sign up every time for a new session?Yes! Since each session is unique, with different topics and activities, you need to register separately for each one. This allows us to plan effectively and ensure a great experience for all participants.

What level of English do I need to join the Bi-Weekly Sessions?Our sessions are open to anyone with at least an A2-B1 level of English. This means you should be able to understand basic conversations and express yourself in simple sentences. These are not tutoring sessions, but rather interactive practice, so some prior English knowledge is required.

Are cameras required during sessions?No, cameras are optional! While we encourage participants to turn them on for a more engaging experience, it is not a requirement. Feel free to participate however you feel most comfortable.

How long does each session last?Each session lasts approximately 90 minutes, including activities, discussions, and interactive elements.

Do I need any materials to participate?Nope! Everything you need will be provided during the session. Just bring yourself, a stable internet connection, and an open mind to practice speaking in a supportive environment.

Is the On-Demand Program free?Yes! The On-Demand Program is completely free of charge. Our goal is to provide accessible English-speaking practice for everyone without financial barriers.

Can I join a group session with my friends?Not yet! Group sessions are a planned feature for the future. Currently, the On-Demand Program only offers one-on-one sessions. Stay tuned for updates!

Can I choose my own mentor?Mentors are assigned based on availability and your learning needs. However, if you have a preferred mentor, you can request them, and we will do our best to accommodate your preference.

How many hours per week do I need to commit?The minimum commitment is 1.5 hours per week, spread across two 45-minute sessions. However, if you want to practice more, you can schedule additional sessions based on availability.

What happens if I need to reschedule a session?If you need to reschedule, please inform your mentor as soon as possible. Rescheduling is flexible, but it should be mutually agreed upon between you and your mentor.

How do I track my progress in the On-Demand Program?Your mentor will provide feedback after each session, and you’ll have regular assessments based on your fluency, vocabulary, and communication skills. You can also discuss your progress with your mentor at any time.

Do I need to prepare anything before my session?No specific preparation is required, but reviewing the session topics and practicing speaking beforehand can be helpful. Your mentor will guide you through the activities and discussions.

How do I cancel my registration if I change my mind?If you decide not to continue, simply contact us via email or message your mentor to inform them. There are no penalties for canceling, but we appreciate a heads-up so we can adjust our scheduling.

Can I take sessions on my phone or tablet?Yes! Sessions can be conducted on any device that supports video calls, including phones, tablets, and laptops. We recommend using a stable internet connection for the best experience.

What happens after I complete the program?After completing the program, you can choose to enroll in another cycle, advance to a higher level, or receive recommendations for further practice. You can also join our Bi-Weekly Sessions to continue practicing in a group setting.

Will I receive a certificate upon completion?Yes! Upon successful completion of the program, you will receive a digital certificate. However, active participation and 100% attendance in the sessions are required to qualify.

Is the volunteering schedule flexible?Yes, our schedules are highly flexible. We operate primarily on a task-based system where volunteers are given assignments to complete within a set timeframe. Specific roles like Speaking Mentors and Moderators do have schedules. For instance, Moderators are expected to be available for our bi-weekly programs at 20:30 (GMT +6:30) every other Sunday. However, all roles still allow for considerable flexibility. Meetings and classes are typically scheduled in coordination with colleagues and students, ensuring everyone can find times that work best for them.

What is the process for applying as a volunteer?Visit our Current Openings page to explore available roles. Fill out the application form for your chosen position. Our team reviews applications and shortlists candidates for interviews. If you’re shortlisted, you’ll receive an email invitation for an interview. If not, we’ll still let you know—we don’t ghost! 😊 Shortlisted candidates will have a brief interview to discuss their skills, interests, and fit for the role. After the interview, we’ll email you to confirm if you’ve been selected. If you receive an offer, you’ll get the details for onboarding. Once accepted, you’ll receive a welcome email with next steps, including onboarding instructions and training details.

What is the commitment required for volunteers?Commitments vary by role, but most require a minimum of 3–5 hours per week. Following a five-week probationary period, successful volunteers are offered a formal contract which can be negotiated for duration, minimum five weeks but it can be extended as long as you want, depending on your availability and interest. Some roles are highly flexible, allowing volunteers to work around their schedules, while others may require adherence to scheduled sessions or meeting project deadlines. This structure ensures that both the needs of our programs and the preferences of our volunteers are met effectively.

Will I receive training and support?Absolutely! All volunteers receive onboarding training to help them understand their roles and responsibilities. You’ll also have access to continuous support from team leads and fellow volunteers. Additionally, we provide online courses, including selected courses from platforms like Udemy, to help you build relevant skills in areas such as communication, leadership, and content creation.
